Golden Vegan Apple Crumble Bake
A comforting dessert featuring tart baking apples beneath a buttery, golden oat crumble. Served warm, the tender fruit and crisp topping are best enjoyed with a pour of cold vegan cream or custard.
Instructions
Step 1: Prep the apples and dish
Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Toss the sliced apples with the 2 tbsp of sugar (for filling), then spread them into a 9in (23cm) round baking dish or an 8in (20cm) square dish. Press down lightly.
Step 2: Make the crumble
In a bowl, mix the flour and the ½ cup of sugar (for topping). Add the cold vegan butter and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles moist breadcrumbs.
Step 3: Top and finish the crumble
Tip the crumble topping over the apples, mounding it slightly in the center. Use a fork to level it, press gently so it holds together, then sprinkle the rolled oats and demerara sugar evenly on top.
Step 4: Bake
Set the dish on a baking tray to catch any drips. Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and a small knife slides into the apples with no resistance. Cool for 10 minutes before serving.
